Each year we return to Europe in the summer to visit family in the UK and whilst away we usually try and fit in a holiday somewhere on the Continent. This year we chose the Spanish island of Mallorca.
It has been a long time since I visited Mallorca (the last time was in the 1990’s and involved a motorbike and camping in a tent I seem to remember). Clearly those days are long gone. For this trip, we chose to stay at Predi Son Jaumell, a beautiful countryside hotel near the town of Capdepera on the East coast.
The hotel is nestled in a peaceful valley close to a number of unspoilt beaches. Surrounded by almond groves, orchards and it’s own vineyard, Predi Son Jaumell is the perfect escape from the hectic pace of city life.
A once historic and important mansion, the hotel has been renovated and restored with the upmost care incorporating original features throughout. The inside of the chimney from the original kitchen remains behind a sheet of glass in the lobby area and at a glance looks almost like black marble or a woven tapestry, whilst the original front door has been carefully incorporated into the new one.
The neutral palette and choice of finishes for the interiors perfectly reflects the surrounding countryside. Artisans from the local town weave all of the baskets and ottomans dotted throughout the hotel and the artworks are all from Mallorcan artists. These details make a difference – not only does it showcase local talent, but it creates a harmonious interior style that links to the heritage of the building.
The rooms are spacious and beautifully styled with natural linens, pale timbers and hand blown glass ‘cloche’ pendants, made in Mallorca, which hang from the ceiling.
The restaurant boasts ex-El Bulli and Michelin starred chef, Andreu Genestra and is a gastronomic delight. A vegetable garden on the premises supplies all of the fresh and in season produce and the food is a perfect combination of tradition and innovation.
But perhaps best of all is the peace and quiet of the outdoor areas. Most rooms have a terrace or balcony on which to relax and the pool area is surrounded by large daybeds complete with billowy white linen canopies.
