Sometimes there is nothing nicer than inviting a friend over for dinner, making something very simple but tasty and sitting on the sofa while eating, chatting and sipping wine. No makeup, no stylish clothes – nothing fancy and everything low key.
Other times it can be nice to go all out with some proper entertaining. Perhaps for a special occasion or simply because you feel like treating your friends and family to a get together with gorgeous food and a beautifully laid table.
With the help of the very talented Tara from Lulu with Love, I have created three table setting looks to give you some inspiration for your next occasion – take your pick from Contemporary, Pretty or Relaxed. Dust off your best linen, consider buying some new beautiful glassware and set the table.
A stylish and modern table setting with a stunning contemporary centrepiece. This look is fresh, clean and modern with white table linen, napkins and plates. The blue of the glassware and small dipping bowl give enough hint of colour to stop the table from being stark. Tara used succulents, lotus pods, Cymbidium orchids and greenery to create a special centrepiece.
This table is dressed to be pretty and relaxed – perfect for celebrating a special friends birthday. A selection of glass vases and jars varying in size and shape hold delicate pink and white flowers for some girly sophistication. This is an easy and cost effective centrepiece using a combination of smaller flowers, with one stand out bloom. Use a variety of heights but stick within a colour theme so that the table does not appear messy. The natural linen table runner is the perfect backdrop for the pretty cluster of flowers.
A simple and beautiful detail is the mini-succulent wrapped in natural linen and tied with string. For a little formality, write the names of your guests (or use a letter sticker as I have done) on natural card tags wrapped around dusty pink linen napkins.
This relaxed table setting is styled using natural linen and a white and green floral colour palette – ideal for a special lunch or Sunday brunch. The irregular shape of the plates and dipping bowls lend themselves to the relaxed nature of the table setting. If laying the table with stacked crockery, consider folding your napkin underneath and let it hang down the table cloth. In keeping with the natural theme, name cards are held with a small timber round.
