The Art of Collaboration: Stunning Artwork with a Story to Tell

In a small marketplace when many solopreneurs toil away on their own - often feeling a bit lonely, buzzing with creativity yet yearning for someone to share ideas with, the finest collaborations unfold. And no more so than that between Samantha Saw from Strait Lights and renowned artist, Fleur Kakasi. Launching this week at Boutiques Fair, Sam and Fleur will be showcasing their collaboration which has resulted in a series of truly stunning artworks presented as prints and tea-towels - which could be framed as art or used as practical tea-towels for drying dishes, as you wish.

The Artwork

I absolutely adore this art series and I think you are going to love it too. Deep indigo watercolour drawings that depict iconic neighbourhood scenes from Singapore. The art feels deeply personal to Singapore but without being clichéd. There is nothing gimmiky or obvious with Fleur’s work. It is elegant and clever - intertwining scenes from Singapore with the flora and fauna that are familiar to us all within a traditional crest emblem - designed to represent each neighbourhood. The East Coast crest is bordered by a pair of roosters, River Valley with a pair of otters - each design unique to the location is represents. Printed on Italian FSC certified paper stock using archival inks, this is artwork that you will want to collect, frame beautifully and treasure.

The Collaboration

To meet Sam and Fleur is to immediately understand how this wonderful collaboration came about - they are both passionate about creating and seeking out opportunities to bring something wonderful to the city they call home. They are also both hardworking and determined - with a deep desire to give their all to the businesses they have created, wrapped up in a warmth and openness that is infectious. It is easy to see how they connected and why what they’ve created is so good. The joy for what they do shines through.

As owner and Founder of Strait Lights, Sam is well known in Singapore for her business which at its heart is all about creating a sense of belonging and an understanding of the importance of ‘place’. Her collections are all designed to tell the story of the neighbourhoods in Singapore and she works with different women when creating her products to help tell these stories. So when she stumbled across an Instagram post of Fleur’s that showed a t-shirt that Fleur had designed of River Valley for her sons, a lightbulb went off. And the idea to create a series of artworks that celebrate belonging to Singapore and the unique neighbourhoods within it was born.

Fast forward 6 months and the collection of eight prints - Sentosa, Bukit Timah, River Valley, East Coast, West Coast, Holland Village, Tanglin/Dempsey and Sembawang is ready to launch at Boutiques this week.
