One of the most popular interior colours is grey - and for good reason. From the palest hue through to mid grey and charcoal, grey is a clever neutral choice when it comes to big purchases like sofas or rugs. It is the perfect contemporary and timeless colour and is versatile enough to be styled with a variety of colour combinations - whether you would like to keep things tonal or create a pop of interest.

If you are looking for an injection of colour to go with your grey sofa, consider a palette that includes a citrine or ochre yellow, petrol blue and a dash of charcoal grey.

Why it works?

The petrol blue and ochre yellow are on opposite sides of the colour wheel which makes them perfect bed fellows. A dash of charcoal grey will help to deepen the look and connect with the underlaying grey of the sofa.

Consider using cushions in different fabrics - silky reflective velvets paired with linen works beautifully.

To allow the pops of colour to work, keep artwork minimal in monochromatic tones.

A beautiful tonal combination that feels warm and cosy, this look cleverly blends grey with natural textures and tones. Everything feels seamless, sophisticated and understated.

why it works

Staying within a tonal palette creates a cohesive look. To make this palette work you need to remember to add in some lighter elements and a dash of black so that it doesn’t end up just being sludgey.

This palette lends itself to soft textures - note that there are no materials that are shiny or reflective. Instead, opt for fabrics with subtle textures - wool, linen, canvas. The cushions in this look are also similar in size and not matching. So consider buying one of each colour rather than pairs.

Grey sofa with blush no 3.jpg

A subtle warm and slightly pretty way to work with grey. Adding in blush creates a contemporary easy-on-the-eye colour combination.

why it works

A dusty soft blush pink is a lovely colour to add to grey as it can warm up grey tones. Make sure the pink is muted in tone - you don’t want anything that becomes too obviously pink. This combination creates a warm and inviting space.

Look for fabrics that are smooth and luxurious - cotton velvets and linens will work beautifully. For an added sense of depth to the palette, consider using one or two velvets with a sheen.

Grey sofa with bold solid colours.jpg

A bold sophisticated and slightly masculine look that feels modern and design led.

why it works

Using a variety of solid colours in combination works when the cushions are from the same range - consistency in the look is achieved through the materials and style of the cushions being identical. The black line of stitching that finishes these cushions also links all of the colours together. In muted shades, the colours work beautifully with grey and create a modern look.

A tonal calming and pared back way to work with grey. This Scandinavian inspired living space is an easy way to get working with grey “right”.

why it works

Sticking with a monochrome colour scheme is a fail safe way to get colour right. To stop it from looking boring and lacking personality, make sure to add in texture and a dash of black to help anchor the space.

If going for a monochrome scheme, be sure to extend the idea to the whole space so that it looks intentional.
